About the QA Register

The QA Register is the United Kingdom Register of Quality Assessed Companies.

It lists quality awards made by certification bodies that have in turn been accredited by UKAS (the United Kingdom Accreditation Service). There are currently over 100 UKAS accredited bodies (see the list of Certification Bodies below). The Register currently includes over 110,000 entries for companies with UKAS accredited certifications for sites in the UK and throughout the world.

For each entry on the Register we show the name and address of the company concerned (as advised to us by our certification body contributors), the standard they have achieved, the certificate number, the name of the awarding body and the complete wording of the scope of certification. Wherever possible we also provide contact information such as telephone, fax, email and website details.

Data on the Register is fully searchable by means of company name, geographical area, standard and/ or awarding certification body. The Register can also be searched by keyword according to the name and/ or address of the company. Keyword searches can also be used to identify companies providing products or services to the quality standards listed in the Register.

United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS)

The United Kingdom Accreditation Service is recognised by the British Government as the sole national body responsible for assessing and accrediting the competence of organisations in the fields of measurement, testing, inspection and certification of systems, products and personnel.

The aims of accreditation are:

  • To enhance the status and authority of laboratories and certification bodies
  • To develop quality assessment procedures which encourage the achievement of excellence
  • To support the promotion of independent certification, thus reducing the burden of multiple assessments by different purchasers of each of their various suppliers
  • To foster the growth of internationally recognised accredited certification schemes
  • To offer advice to the Government on accreditation and certification.

Accreditation is a key means of improving the quality and competitiveness of UK industry.

The body operates as a company limited by guarantee whose members represent the spectrum of national interests in accreditation. Its founder members are:

The Secretary of State for Trade and Industry
The Association of British Certification Bodies
British Measurement and Testing Association
Confederation of British Industry
The Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions
Federation of Small Businesses
The Local Authorities Coordinating Body on Food and Trading Standards
National Industries Liaison Group on Quality
The Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply
The Institute of Quality Assurance
The Safety Assessment Federation

UKAS accreditation of third party independent certification bodies and testing and calibration laboratories is recognition that they meet internationally agreed criteria covering integrity, technical competence and validity of methods. For certification bodies, accreditation also indicates that its assessors have the capability to assess companies to BS EN ISO 9000 in specific business areas to a consistent level of quality.

Accreditations made by NAMAS and NACCB remain valid. However, from 1 January 2001, accredited organisations must use the UKAS accreditation marks on their stationery, reports etc subject to the rules of the accrediting body.

UKAS offers accreditation of:

Calibration/Testing Laboratories to EN 45001
Supplier Quality Management Systems Certification to EN 45012
Operation of various types of bodies performing inspection to EN 45004
Product Conformity Certification to EN 45011
Personnel Certification to EN 45013
Environmental Management Certification to EN 45012
Notified Bodies under EC Directives
Second Party Assessment Bodies to a modified version of EN 45012

What is ISO 9000?

ISO 9000 is the offspring of the International Organisation for Standardisation. Based in Geneva, Switzerland, ISO is a consortium of virtually all of the world's industrialised nations – from Albania to Zimbabwe. The group's mission is to develop industrial standards that facilitate international trade. ISO 9000 is a quality system standard. It applies not to products and services, but to the process which creates them. It is designed and intended to apply to virtually any product or service made by any process anywhere in the world. It emphasises principles, goals and objectives. All of these focus upon one main aim – the same aim which drives every business – meeting customer requirements and expectations.

A well designed, well implemented, and carefully managed ISO 9000 quality system provides confidence that the output of the process will meet customer requirements and expectations, and it does this by requiring that every business activity is conducted in a three-part, never-ending cycle: planning, control and documentation.

ISO 9000 is good, strong business common sense.

Further information on standards can be found on the Institute of Quality Assurance website - http://www.iqa.org

Standards, included in the QA Register

The QA Register aims to list all organisations with accredited management system certification awarded by bodies accredited by UKAS

The QA Register lists accredited certifications to the following standards (or combinations thereof):

BS EN ISO 9001:2000 (Quality management system certification)

BS EN ISO 14001:2004 (Environmental management system certification)

BS 7799:Part 2:2005 (ISO 27001:2005) (Information security management system certification)

BS EN ISO 13485:2003 (Quality management system certification in the field of medical devices)

QS 9000:1998 (Quality management system certification in automotive field - valid only to 15 December 2006)

BS 15000-1 (ISO/IEC 20000-1) (IT service management system certification)

Note:
Where the certification standard is listed above as "BS EN ISO", the certificate issued by the certification body may be worded explicitly as the individual BS, EN or ISO standard, or as a combination of BS, EN and ISO.

Where a certification body is accredited by UKAS to certify specific additional management system sector schemes, these may be listed in the QA Register in combination with the appropriate standard above (for example: BS EN ISO 9001:2000 + TickIT). Only those schemes that are specifically mentioned in the scope of accreditation of the particular certification body may be listed as additions to the standards as this means that UKAS has specifically assessed the certification body as competent to issue combined certificates in these fields. Certificates may not be issued for a sector scheme on its own.
